What is Pilates?

Pilates is a mindful movement system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, who called it Contrology — the art of controlling your body through precise, balanced motion.

Unlike traditional gym workouts focused on lifting heavy weights, Pilates emphasizes controlled strength, posture, and breathing. It engages your core muscles — the abdominals, lower back, hips, and glutes — to improve stability, flexibility, and overall body awareness.

Today, millions of people around the world practice Pilates for its ability to tone muscles, enhance mobility, and reduce stress. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, looking to improve athletic performance, or simply want to move with more ease, Pilates offers a low-impact yet deeply effective way to build strength from the inside out.

Health benefits of Pilates in Shrewsbury

Pilates offers a wide range of benefits for both body and mind. By focusing on controlled movement, balance, and core stability, Pilates helps you improve flexibility, increase muscle strength and tone, and build better posture.

It specifically targets the core muscles — the abdominals, lower back, hips, and glutes — creating balanced strength on both sides of the body. Regular practice enhances muscular control, joint mobility, and overall body awareness, while also helping to relieve tension and prevent injuries.

At Marica Holistic Pilates in Shrewsbury, classes are designed to help you move with confidence and ease. Whether you’re seeking to tone your body, strengthen your core, or improve your flexibility, Pilates provides a mindful, low-impact path to long-term fitness and wellbeing.

Pilates Classes feedback

“Marica has revolutionised my life! I have been doing Pilates with Marica for about a year and found it significantly reduced the pain and stiffness of Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Marica’s Shiatsu massage has resolved some really long term issues. My neck and shoulders have been painful for more than ten years, and I have had conventional physio for the problem on several occasions – to no avail. After about eight sessions of Shiatsu massage I now only suffer from an occasional stiff neck – none of the shooting pains up my scalp and across my shoulders. Marica also found that the muscles have shortened in my right leg (due to an accident when I was 12), causing me to hitch up that hip and throw my whole body out of line. We are gradually releasing those muscles with stretching and massage, and I can feel my body finding new postures. I can’t wait to see how I am once this is resolved!

I am amazed by the depth of knowledge and experience that Marica brings to her classes and private sessions – no other one person has improved my wellbeing this much!”

Olit or Holistic training is a combination of Pilates, Yoga, Tai Chi movement. This class is set to music and it’s a slow pace. There are few difference between Olit and Pilates; in Olit the music it’s important as it’s a dance class, that means we follow the bit of the music as we swap from one movement to another.  Also it’s a mainly standing class whilst Pilates it’s a mainly a mat work.  Both have the main aims to improve skills like; muscle strength, sense or coordination, flexibility, sense of balance and sense or rhythm.

The group sessions are more general focused to create joints and spine mobility as well as muscle and core strength. One to one sessions are based on a person’s needs that means the programme of exercises are organised to achieve his/hers personal goals.
